This Old House has been helping homeowners get the most from their home for years. We do the same thing, only our expertise lies mainly in the exciting world of HVAC. This Old House produced a pretty lengthy list of things you can do to make your home healthier (you can read the whole thing here). Here were some of our top picks.

Reduce Allergy Symptoms in your Home

The air filter in your home’s heating and cooling system works hard to trap allergens such as dust, pollen, and pet dander, as well as other harmful microbes such as bacteria. Still, you can always do more. If you suffer from severe allergies to common household allergens, then taking these steps can help you breathe easier in your own home.

  • Vacuum, dust, and mop more regularly. This helps prevent the buildup of allergens in your home.
  • Avoid using household cleaners that contain ammonia or chlorine. These chemicals are rough on your respiratory system. Many cleaners now exist which are free from both chlorine and ammonia and still get your home perfectly clean.
  • Invest in machine-washable curtains. You probably never think about it, but your curtains work like one big dust trap. Vacuuming them helps, but if you’re sensitive to home allergens, then being able to wash them can make a big difference.
  • Keep pollen out. During high pollen days of the year, keep your home closed as much as possible. Avoid opening windows (even though it may be nice outside). During pollen season, take off shoes before walking through your home. They’ll track in pollen from the outdoors.
  • Put doormats on both sides of your doors. This helps prevent dirt and allergens from being tracked into your home. It also helps keep your home that much cleaner.
  • Caulk holes and crevices. Small holes and crevices can be another source of allergens. They let unfiltered air into your home and can be a hiding place for mold and mildew.

We help Richmond-area residents find the sources of trouble and can help correct them. Before you pay to have your ducts cleaned, have them checked for leaks, which is a common issue. If your duct work has leaks it will continue to pull dirty air into the HVAC system. Stop allergy triggers at the source. Contact Atlantic Heat to set up a home evaluation and start feeling better soon.

Researching Best Heat Pumps

If you shop for the best ratings before making a large investment, these heat pumps are the best of the best. All of the heat pumps in this list meet the Energy Star requirement of a 14.5 SEER rating and have been evaluated based on their performance and the quality of their components. The list was researched and compiled by WebHVAC.com. In order to be considered for the list a heat pump had to be determined to have excellent performance and be of high quality. The ten best rated models are shown. Atlantic Heat in Richmond, VA, is an authorized dealer of Amana, American Standard, York and Carrier, and a Premier Lennox Dealer. We service almost any brand.

1. Maytag PSH4BI iQ Drive 22 SEER 10 HSPF Heat Pump
22 SEER cooling; 10.0 HSPF heating.
This model is extremely efficient and features state of the art technology which varies the unit’s capacity between 40% and 100% to maintain even temperatures while using as little energy as possible to achieve this goal. Since it usually runs on lower capacity to improve overall performance, this unit is exceptionally quiet.
2. Carrier Infinity Series Heat Pump With Greenspeed Intelligence / Carrier Infinity 25VNAO
20.5 SEER cooling; 13.0 HSPF heating.
A popular choice among homeowners seeking green heating and cooling solutions for their homes, this model also features a modulating compressor. Much like the Maytag model above, this model runs quiet and is highly efficient. Ideal for operating in areas where extreme temperatures are the norm.
3. American Standard Platinum ZM Heritage 20 Heat Pump
19 SEER Cooling; 9 HSPF Heating.
Though not as efficient as the first two, this model offers top-tier efficiency while offering a considerable price break from the models in spots one and two. This heat pump cuts energy use by an average of 50%, which could be even more if you are replacing an older unit. It also features one of the best available warranties.
4. Trane XL 16i Heat Pump
18 SEER Cooling; 9.2 HSPF Heating
A great combination of value and performance. The unique energy saving feature here is it’s dual fuel capability- meaning it runs in tandem with a gas furnace. The heat pump is efficient above 40 degrees F., below that the gas furnace (which is more efficient at colder temperatures) kicks in. An excellent choice for customers living in areas prone to very cold winters.
5. Heil Model 9.5 HSPF 17 SEER Heat Pump
17 SEER Cooling; 9.5 HSPF Heating
A solid, efficient heat pump at a reasonable price. This model also features a two-stage compressor which aids in its efficiency.

6. Lennox Elite XP16
17 SEER Cooling; 8.7 HPSF Heating
This unique dual fuel model also features a dual stage compressor for added efficiency. This model is also effective at preventing hod/cold zones within your home.
7. Goodman 16 SEER R-410A Refrigerant SSZ16 Heat Pump
16 SEER Cooling; 9.75 HSPF Heating
Dual fuel unit ideal for cooler climates where a high SEER rating isn’t necessary. One of the top brands in the industry, this affordable model uses the top-rated Copeland Ultratech scroll compressor. This heat pump also includes an excellent warranty.
8. Bryant Preferred Series model 223A 15 SEER Heat Pump
15 SEER Cooling; 8.8 HSPF Heating
A dual fuel model ideal for cooler, northern climates. A single stage model, this heat pump is more affordable than a two stage model. An excellent deal for those seeking efficiency and economy.
9. Ruud model UPQL-AZ Heat Pump
15 SEER Cooling; 10.45 HSPF Heating
Designated “Best In Class” heating, this unit features a single stage compressor. Designed for climates that experience very low temperatures, it also features the Copeland Ultratech scroll compressor.
10. York Model THGF Heat Pump
14.5 SEER Cooling; 9 HSPF Heating
A reliable single stage heat pump ideal for mild climates that do not experience extreme temperatures. It’s low price makes it ideal for vacation homes where cost is more important than efficiency.

Upgrading to an Energy Efficient Heat Pump Could Ultimately Cost Less

When was your home built, or more importantly, when was your heat pump last replaced? Many large neighborhoods in Richmond and the surrounding counties were built in the 1990′s and homeowners are reaching the stage of replacing heat pumps and air conditioners. New homes are often constructed with “builder grade” heat pumps that may or may not be the best unit for the home and tougher on your wallet.

Don’t Sweat the Sticker Price

The initial cost of installing a heat pump can be a deterrent for many people. Energy efficient models generally cost more, but the more energy efficient, the less it costs to run it. Often the energy savings will offset the money you spent to buy your new heat pump before you reach the end of its warranty.

What to Look For

When buying an energy efficient heat pump, look for the SEER rating. This rating tells you how efficient the unit is and the higher the number, the better. The government has established a minimum SEER rating of 13, so you shouldn’t see any numbers lower than that. The maximum available SEER rating is 23.

Do the Math

The cost of running an older heat pump can be more than you might realize. In addition to higher energy bills, consider the costs of maintenance and repairs on an older unit. Take a look at this chart that shows the annual energy savings of a higher SEER replacing a lower SEER. The greater the difference in the SEER of the new and old heat pumps, the great the energy savings.

If you have questions or would like to schedule a free estimate, call Atlantic Heating & Cooling or contact us online. We’ll be glad to service your air conditioner or heat pump for a improved efficiency, or replace it with a new energy saving appliance.

Air Conditioner Theft

It is a growing trend; homeowners and businesses are victimized by burglars stealing air conditioners or heat pumps. Sometimes the units are being reused for the intended purpose of heating and cooling, but often the units are sold for the metal inside. This is an expensive loss for homeowners, and only a small gain for the burglars. We are seeing this crime increase right here in the Richmond area.

Coolant Huffing

Another dangerous trend is youth inhaling or “huffing” the coolant to get a high. This is very dangerous for kids and is a costly hassle for homeowners and businesses because the drop in coolant will decrease the ability for the air conditioner to do its job. This often prompts a service call that would otherwise be unnecessary.

Prevent Air Conditioner Tampering

air conditioner repair

Atlantic Heat can install a device on your AC unit that works with your security system to warn you of a drop in coolant pressure.

People in Chicago are going as far as to cage and lock the air conditioners to prevent theft. There is a less intrusive solution to solve both AC theft and huffing dangers in Richmond, VA. We are teaming with our friends at Richmond Alarm Company to add a device that senses loss of pressure in the lines (ex: when the lines are cut to be removed from the house or access coolant) and the home security system will alert you by phone. It is your option to have the alarm company contact the police – if you can see there is no one at your AC unit, a false alarm is averted, but will know that there is an issue with your system. If the issue is low coolant, contact Atlantic Heat to service the unit. Home security systems with the Total Connect app can even notify you with an email message when a low coolant condition occurs.

Indoor air pollutants cause year round allergy symptoms

It’s about that time of year again. The time of irritated, watery eyes, runny noses, chest congestion, headaches and side effects of allergies. Depending on the severity of your allergies, these side effects can become hindrances to your everyday life. But what about those of us who seem to have allergies all year round? You could be allergic to your home.

Indoor Air Quality Is Usually Worse Than the Air Outdoors

According to the National Safety Council, indoor air quality is typically 2-5 times worse than the air outside. The reason for this is that many homes, in an effort to be more energy efficient, are nearly airtight. This keeps outdoor contaminants out, but also keeps the indoor contaminants such as pet dander, mold, and bacteria inside. These contaminants and allergens build up over time, creating environments that can lead to asthma, allergies, or worse. You can read about the some of the causes and hazards identified by the EPA. There’s no need to be allergic to your home, there are simple steps you can take to reduce in-home allergens and live more comfortably.

Simple Solutions to Alleviate Allergy Symptoms

You don’t have to pop allergy pills every four hours to reduce allergy symptoms. Often, these symptoms can be alleviated with adjustments to your home’s ventilation system. Adding a HEPA filter to your system, and regularly replacing an existing HEPA filter can help ensure that pollutants are removed from circulation in your home, resulting in cleaner air with fewer irritants. Regular air system checkups and tune-ups ensure your system is working properly and that your unit is maintaining proper humidity and airflow settings. Our Comfort Club members receive this service for free as part of their annual Comfort Plan. Additionally, Atlantic Heating and Cooling offers a wide range of indoor air quality solutions that not only remove allergens from your home, but also help make your home more energy efficient.

No one should be allergic to their own home. If you would like to learn more about removing allergens from your home’s ventilation systems, or if you want to schedule a free home inspection, contact us. >> What Is a SEER Rating?

Posted by on March 7, 2012 with 0 Comments

Home Heat & AC Products must meet Government Standards

When it comes to your home’s heating and cooling efficiency, the SEER rating is a very important number. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, a number that is determined by the manufacturer and required by the U.S. government. The SEER tells consumers how energy efficient a home heating and cooling unit is.

How Does the SEER Rating Affect Me?

The SEER rating is similar to the MPG sticker on your car. It tells you how much you get out compared to how much you put in, so you can calculate the total cost-benefit of your heating and cooling system. Just like the MPG number, the higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit. As of 2006, the U.S. government requires that newly manufactured systems have a minimum SEER 13. Currently, there are models on the market that are rated as high as SEER 23. Higher SEER models are expected in the near future as energy prices continue to climb. In most states, heat pumps and air conditioners in new homes are required to have a minimum SEER 12. The purchase and installation of more efficient units in new homes can help home builders earn the Energy Star® New Home incentive by increasing the home’s energy efficiency. This savings is passed on to home buyers.

Use SEER to Your Advantage

Local and federal government and even energy companies offer rebates and other financial incentives for you to purchase and install heating and cooling units with a high SEER rating. See some of the incentives available to Virginians. In addition to incentives and rebates, a higher SEER number means you spend less money on heating and cooling your home. Who doesn’t want that?

Contact us online or call 804-491-9420 to hear more about the heat pumps and air conditioners we install with a range of SEERs to meet your budget.
